Veritas Digital Services Ltd, working in conjunctionwith Schools to facilitate the delivery of  textbooks and library books toschools in forgotten, disadvantaged areas of  the world :The IVHQ (International Volunteer
Head Quarters) Zambia volunteer programme is based in Livingstone, Zambia.
Volunteer placements are located in Livingstone and surrounding rural areas. In Zambia, there is currently a lack of educational
establishments for a large proportion of poor or disadvantaged children. Local
communities have informally developed ‘community schools’ to serve this immense
need for education. A number of these schools offer free admission to students
in need, many of whom are orphaned or living with elderly family members, and
cannot afford school fees. These schools depend heavily on volunteers and the
ratio of students to teachers can be extremely high.

At Dream Centre, almost all of teachers are
volunteers who come to Zambia for up to four months at a time and are then
replaced by new volunteers. Although the volunteers are eager to work here and
strive to work hard, they are mostly young adults with little or no teaching
experience. The pupils are often very weak in terms of literacy and numeracy
and would benefit from textbooks and/or any reading materials, as would the
volunteers in assisting them to teach. The schoolrooms are small, with no
tables or chairs and pupils sit on the floor in fairly cramped conditions to
learn. They are, however, very happy to be able to come to a school and quickly
form strong bonds with the volunteers. The school can only run as it is
supported by volunteers, who go there through the IVHQ programme. Volunteers
pay for their own flights, food and accommodation and are evidently not paid
but do a great job with these children who would otherwise have no access to
education at all.

In the UK as the curriculum changes, many textbooks
and old(ish) library books are thrown into school recycling tips at the end of
every school year. A couple of schools in Cheltenham have given books that were
due to be thrown away to be sent to Zambia, where any books would be welcomed
and treasured.
